A Comparison of Mystic Anecdotes of Holy Joseph in Kashf aAl-Asrār and Jāme’ al-Settin

Authors

Abstract

The story of Joseph in the Holy Quran is an adequate context for mystic interpretation and anecdotes. In this story, man’s deepest emotions such as love, hatred, ambition, enmity, etc have been represented. Sometimes, events in this story go beyond what they explicitly state, which has been an asset for Sufis and other scholars. Meybodi, the author of most Well-known interpretation work on Sufism, explores Quranic verses and stories in his al-Nowbah al-Salethah and interprets them using Sufism. The Quranic story of Joseph is but one example of this type of interpretation. There is another identical interpretation of the story of written well before Meybodi around 460- 470 (A.H) by Muhammad Ibne Zayd Toosi in al- Jame’ al-Settin Lelatāyef al- Basatin. This paper comparatively analyzes these two works.
