Ghāzzali and Quranic Interpretation

Author

Abstract

Ghazzāli is one of the greatest exceptional scholars in the history of Islamic civihization. He has had various experiences but finally turned out to be a sufi. His works in Suffism are each manifestations of man ’s innate journey arrived at through Quran and traditions. His two works of interpretation Meshkat Al-Anwar on Holy Quran (Allah is the light of heavens and earth 24/ 35) and “Jawaher Al-Quran and Dorarahu” are specially noteworthy.
A part from common superficial interpretations, he has also extensively used the technique of Ta’wil (exegesis) in his works. He has done relatively the same thing in many of his other works. In addition, to the usual interpretation, he has used exegesis to understand and interpret religion. About the origin of the Holy Quran he believes in divine revelations and implications. To him the secrets of Quran can be revealed only to those who have developed the prerequisite wisdom and made a balance between the tangible and the logical. The strategy for this balance is revelation and intuition.
