Abstract

Seeing things differently, as discussed in this paper, is the link between Sufism and art. It is a quality shared by both Sufis and artists. This quality has two dimensions: the dimension of insight and the dimension of actions. With their insights, artists and Sufis see the world differently. They see things that others do not see. They also see things that everybody else sees in different ways. They perceive things that others do not. They make their new perceptions available to others through new forms and new structures such as rhythm in poetry, music or color in painting or stone in sculptures. They communicate their different perceptions through what we call art works. In this paper, the above–mentioned points will be explored. Examples of Sufis' deeds and words will be discussed in terms of insights and perspective, which show that every real Sufi is also an artist.
